Fasting for Health
Greetings to you all! In this week's Teesha Talk Tuesday, we will be discussing what it is/means to fast and what the added health benefits are.
Fasting is the act of refraining from eating or drinking for a period of time. It is an extremely effective way to cleanse and purify the body and mind and it allows the entire digestive system time to rest while allowing your body have a "factory reset". It's often noted that it makes people feel more alert and clear-headed, which enables them to focus better and achieve longer periods of concentration or meditation. A short fast can last between one to three days whereas a long fast can last from two weeks to borderline a month; either way, it is strongly advise that one seeks advice from an herbalist or naturopath prior to fasting to ensure their body goes through the proper detoxification. It is also best advised to ingest a light diet prior to fasting so your body won't spend an excessive amount of time digesting heavy solids. So, eating light proportions of fruits and vegetables, some yogurt, and a great blend of tea. Furthermore, common side effects of fasting would be feeling shivery or a little colder than usual, mild headaches, some dizziness, and possibly nausea and palpitations. Typically the side effects are rather mild, but if you do experience severe reactions to it including trouble breathing and strong palpitations, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor or local care provider immediately.
