Benefits of Outdoor Yoga
Yoga is special because it can be done anywhere at any time; with just a mat and a little bit of focus you can travel vast distances by just looking inward. I personally love to practice my poses outside, early morning when there’s still dew on the grass and birds chirping! Practicing yoga outside has numerous benefits that can improve your yogi lifestyle. Normally, we spend up to 90% of our time inside, looking at screens or working. Each day we are becoming increasingly disconnected to the world around us. When practicing yoga outside, it awakens something native and instinctual inside of us keeping us alert to our surroundings and replenishing the energy that we depleted throughout the week. The new terrains that you practice on whether it be grass, boulders, or sand puts your strength and balance to the test; engaging new parts of your body that you can’t get to in a normal studio. Feeling your toes in the sand or fingers in the grass helps ground you to the Earth and engages your five senses; you’re stimulated and you become one with the world around you.
According to a study done in 2012, memory and attention span increases by 20% by just spending at least two hours or more outdoors. Practicing yoga in different places also builds your confidence as a yogi. Although it may be awkward when you first roll out your mat outside, you may feel vulnerable and “watched” but as you continue to practice, you can create a sanctuary within yourself wherever you are and give a new perspective to your practice. Another benefit of practicing outdoors is boosting your focus during meditation; Based on a field study in Environmental Health and Preventative Medicine show that those who practice in the forest versus an urban environment had a lower concentration of the stress hormone cortisol.
