Mental Health & Meditation

Mental health is something that many people all over the world struggle with everyday. Depending on the degree of traumas we’ve endured or the anxiety we feel on a daily basis, it can truly hinder how we react to others and how we perceive the world. Meditation has been proven to have positive effects on mental health, along with its physical attributes. Mindful Meditation is the practice of thinking deeply or focusing one’s mind. There have been numerous studies, particularly one done by JAMA Internal Medicine that prove that mindful-based stress reduction helped ease anxiety symptoms, depression and even reduced chronic pain. Dr. Hoge from the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders believes that the reason why meditation benefits those with anxiety so well is because “people with anxiety struggle with thoughts that have too much power. It becomes difficult for them to differentiate between a problem solving thoughts and a nagging thoughts that offer no benefit.” Meditation allows you to focus on the present and leave behind the past while disregarding the future. When you are at rest during meditation, your brain goes into default mode network which has been proven to improve memory, goal setting, and self awareness. Meditation also changes your brain waves; those who meditate produce more alpha waves which have been shown to reduce tension, anger and negative mood. On top of all that, meditation increases your energy and brings the harmony into your life that those with mental illnesses crave and need.
